LEARNING & TEACHING RESOURCES
Below are resources you may find useful for the purposes of teaching and learning.

Quizlet is an American online study application that allows students to study information via learning tools and games. It was created by Andrew Sutherland in October 2005 and released to the public in January 2007.
Quizlet trains students via flashcards and various games and tests. As of February 6, 2019, Quizlet has over 300 million user-generated flashcard sets and more than 50 million active users. It now ranks among the top 50 websites in the U.S. In 2016, Quizlet was recognized by SimilarWeb as the fastest growing US Education site in 2015.
As a memorization tool, Quizlet lets registered users create sets of terms and definition customized for their own needs. These sets of terms can then be studied under several study modes.
This mode is similar to paper flash cards. Users are shown a "card" for each term, which they can flip over by clicking or using the arrow keys or space bar. The user has the option for the face of the card to be an image, a word, or both.
In this study mode, definitions scroll vertically down the screen in the shape of asteroids. The user must type the term that goes with the definition before it reaches the bottom of the screen. It is one of the 'Play' study modes. Gravity was adapted from a previous game, Space Race. The user can pick the level of difficulty and game type.
In this study mode, users are shown a term or definition and must type the term or definition that goes with what is shown. After entering their answer, users see if their answer was correct or not, and can choose to override the automatic grading and count their answer as right if needed. This mode was previously called "Learn."
In this mode, the term is read out loud and users must type in the term with the correct spelling. If the user gets every answer correct, they are rewarded with a video of a monster truck doing a jump, wheelie, and a flip.
In this study mode, users are presented with a grid of scattered terms. Users drag terms on top of their associated definitions to remove them from the grid and try to clear the grid in the fastest time possible. Micro-match is a related matching game geared towards mobile devices and devices with small screens. Users may access the Micromatch mode on non-mobile devices by manually editing the URL in Match mode to use "micromatch" instead of "match". Match was previously attributed as "Scatter". Though the name of the study mode changed, the game itself did not.
In this study mode, a Quizlet user (usually a teacher) breaks their class up into teams of however number of teams they want or play the game with students individually. The teacher chooses whether to start with a definition or term. Each team will have to choose the correct term/definition to win, with the team that has the most points winning. If the teacher decides to shuffle the teams, the groups are randomly put into new teams. This game works by choosing a set of flashcards and putting these flashcards into a format which works for the game. If an player or team chooses the incorrect term or definition, the score will reset.
Extensive Reading (ER) is compulsory as it makes of 10% - 20% of Reading 1 & 2 assessments, while students can choose graded readers of their interests and levels. It is advisable to read a wide range.
What are Graded Readers?
Graded Readers (also called ‘Readers’) are books (both fiction and non-fiction) written especially for language learners to build their reading speed and fluency and to give them chances to practice ‘real’ reading for pleasure. They are called ‘graded’ readers because they are written according to a pedagogical syllabus which has increasing grades, or levels, of difficulty. They are graded through tight control of the plot, vocabulary, and grammar and judicious use of images. Native books have many words which appear only one or two times whereas publishers control the vocabulary in graded readers to get rid of low frequency words and to make useful words appear more frequently to help learning. (ERF, 2011)
There are more than 3000 books (of more than 500 titles) for you to choose from at Quang Trung and Nguyen Van Trang libraries. (09/2017)
Use your M-Reader account (Login ID: hoasen-studentid; and Password: studentid to login to the M-Reader.org webpage to take the quizzes. As you are logged in, you will see your own page like this (Figure 1):

Figure 1
As you have already logged in, you should change your password for security reasons.
Go to one of the libraries at Nguyen Van Trang Campus or Quang Trung Campus and ask someone out there for graded readers for use with the Extensive Reading Program. Choose any books that interest you, ones that should be easy enough for you. If you find only 2-3 words on any page that you don’t understand, this means that the book level is just right for you. “Fewer difficult words” means it is too easy (you won’t make much progress) while “More difficult words” means it is more difficult to understand (so you don’t enjoy much).
Your current level is set at level 2 (for Reading 1) and level 4 (for Reading 2), but you can choose to read books at lower or higher levels. You are encouraged to read from 30,000 words to 60,000 words per 15 weeks, but this is not compulsory. If you have finished a reader entitled “The call of the wild” for example, now it’s time to login to your account and take the quiz.
To search for a quiz, type in the title of the book or just key word(s) from the title into the green search box, at the bottom of your page.
Another way to search for available books and quizzes is by clicking “View available quizzes” tab on the top of your page (Figure 2):

Figure 2
Then another box will appear, which looks like the one below. In the “Display Criteria”, if you view “images”, covers of the book(s) of the same title by different publishers will appear. There is a frame, which can be green or red. Green frame means there is a quiz available for you to take; while red frame means there is no quiz for this book or you are not allowed to take the quiz. If you view ‘words’, titles of books of the same title will appear, and at your right hand side, there is ‘take quiz now’. See Figure 3.

Figure 3
When you have searched for a title you have finished reading, many book covers may appear. Look for the exact book title and publisher before you click to take the quiz.
If the outer frame of the book cover is green, you can take that quiz. If it is red, you are not allowed to do so. There are several reasons for this. One is that you have already take that title, now you are not to take it again (regardless of the publisher’s). Another reason is because you are in your “waiting time” – you can only take a quiz at a time after 48 hours or 2 days (regardless of the fact that you have or have not passed a quiz). The last (but not least) reason is if you do not answer all the post-quiz questions, it means the quiz is not complete, and you will hang there.
![]() |
As said, you can only take a quiz every two days, so manage your time well. Many students turn out to “enjoy” reading till the last minutes, but time does NOT allow you to do so.
Happy reading!
